A recent Sky News poll indicates strong opposition among Oireachtas members to Conor McGregor's bid for the presidency, with 134 out of 164 responding politicians openly rejecting the notion. Comments described him as a "misogynist" and "vulgarian," highlighting his divisive persona as unsuitable for the role. Despite the pushback, it's noted that there remains a slim possibility for McGregor to receive nominations from independent politicians who did not participate in the survey. The article stresses the urgency and disapproval of McGregor's candidacy among numerous political figures and public representatives.
Asked whether they would nominate Mr McGregor, one unnamed senator described him as "a tacky, moronic vulgarian" while another called him a "cheerleader for misogyny in Ireland" and a "populist buffoon".
I genuinely would struggle to think of anyone worse to hold that position," said Fine Gael senator Garret Ahearn.
Labour TD Duncan Smith said he could not think of "anyone more unfit for public office".
Another survey conducted by the Irish Times this weekend found that just one of 188 councillors surveyed about the MMA fighter's presidential aspirations was supportive.
