Donald Trump and Elon Musk have advocated for privatizing the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), an independent agency. Experts warn that this could lead to increased costs, particularly harming rural communities and businesses that rely on postal services. Trump has suggested merging USPS with the Commerce Department, raising concerns about how privatization might eliminate current regulations. Despite recent profit reports, the USPS continues to face significant financial losses. Critics argue that private companies prioritize shareholders over public welfare, potentially diminishing service quality.
"Nobody at FedEx or UPS is looking after the public interest," James O'Rourke, who teaches management and organization at the University of Notre Dame and studies the USPS, told Business Insider.
In December, Trump said he was "looking into" privatizing the agency. And in late February, he suggested placing the USPS under control of the Commerce Department.
