SF City Attorney Vows Legal Action If Trump Sends In National Guard, Joins Amicus Brief at Supreme Court
"As in other jurisdictions, by federalizing the National Guard in Chicago, the Government failed to meet statutory thresholds and threatens to trample the foundational principles forbidding federal military involvement in civilian law enforcement."
"These deployments inflame tensions, undermine local law enforcement, and harm local economies. We are joining local jurisdictions across the country to defend the rule of law and our right to peace and safety."
"Should President Trump make good on his ridiculous threats to send the military to San Francisco, our city is prepared, and my office is prepared to take the necessary legal action to defend San Francisco."
"we're gonna have troops everywhere,"
The City of San Francisco joined a coalition of 109 mayors and local officials in an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to stop deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago. The brief argues that federalizing the Guard failed to meet statutory thresholds and threatens principles forbidding federal military involvement in civilian law enforcement. The coalition noted presidential statements about sending troops broadly and called such deployments dangerous and unprecedented. San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said deployments inflame tensions, undermine local policing, harm local economies, and vowed legal action if military forces are sent to San Francisco. The Ninth Circuit recently ruled for the administration on a Portland deployment.
