Trump says he's terminating trade negotiations with Canada over Ontario anti-tariff ad | CBC News
"TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A."
"Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED."
"When someone says let's impose tariffs on foreign imports, it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs,"
"High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. Then the worst happens. Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industry shut down, and millions of people lose their jobs,"
President Donald Trump announced on social media that he was terminating all trade negotiations with Canada after an Ontario government advertisement used Ronald Reagan's words warning against tariffs. Trump called the ad fraudulent and fake, wrote that tariffs are important to U.S. national security and economy, and declared talks terminated. Ottawa was informed shortly before the post, according to a senior federal source. The ad, produced by Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government, contains a minute-long excerpt from Reagan's April 1987 radio address warning that high tariffs provoke retaliation, trigger trade wars, shrink markets, collapse businesses and cost millions of jobs. Two weeks earlier Trump had directed cabinet members to negotiate a deal on steel, aluminum and energy.
