Trump's 'big beautiful bill' includes attack on trans healthcare
Briefly

The US House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a significant legislative package focused on tax cuts and military funding, yet also imposing severe cuts to healthcare for trans individuals. The bill, which passed 215-214, notably prohibits Medicaid and CHIP from covering gender-affirming care and removes essential health benefits for these procedures under Obamacare. Critics, including trans Congresswoman Sarah McBride and Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson, condemned the bill as a harmful step against the rights of trans people, prioritizing financial benefits for wealthy individuals instead of broader access to healthcare for all.
After divisive debate the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a more than 1,000 page piece of legislation, was passed on Thursday (22 May) in the Republican-controlled House with a tight 215-214 vote.
Democrat Sarah McBride, who is the first out trans congresswoman, told The Independent the bill is "one more example of health care that they're trying to rip away".
In response to the bill's passage, and the impact it will have on countless trans folks, Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson labelled it as "cruel".
Kelley Robinson stated, "People in this country want policies and solutions that make life better and expand access to the American Dream. Instead, anti-equality lawmakers voted to give handouts to billionaires built on the backs of hardworking people."
