The Imperfect Index, launched by Abbie and Laura after a successful live event in Bristol, showcases collaborative efforts to diversify graphic design practices. The project's first edition features contributions addressing various critical topics, including non-Western scripts, the Black experience in design, and access to education. Published by Sold Out Publishing, it flips traditional design formats, placing multiple indexes at the beginning and utilizing a picture index to accommodate non-English speakers, emphasizing an unhierarchical approach and inclusive content that reflects a broad range of experiences within the design community.
Firstly, the indexes are at the front of the publication, as opposed to the back. Secondly there are multiple indexes - people, projects, texts, themes and, as mentioned, images - another design decision to invite more people into this reference document.
The first edition of the index shared a collection of contributions that voice 'urgent approaches' to diversify design, platforming voices from 'a wide range of lived experiences and specialisms'.
