Shakespeare & Co. on the Upper West Side is officially closing because of financial reasons
Briefly

Shakespeare & Co., a cherished bookstore in Manhattan, will close its Upper West Side location by the end of April due to economic challenges. Owner Dane Neller noted that despite a supportive community and good landlord, the sales did not meet necessary levels for sustainability. A message from staff expressed appreciation for the community's support. The bookstore will continue to operate at its Lincoln Center and Upper East Side locations, but there are concerns about the future amidst ongoing financial issues within the retail sector.
It was a really great landlord, a wonderful community. We just weren't able to get to the sales level we needed to make the store sustainable.
The staff put up a store closing announcement on the shop's window expressing gratitude for the support received by the community throughout the months in operation.
Shakespeare & Co. debuted its first ever address on the Upper West Side back in 1983 but was forced to shutter years later following the advent of Amazon.
