Cloud Chamber laid off 80 employees, about one-third of its roughly 250-person studio, to rework core elements of BioShock 4. The game's story and other significant aspects are being rewritten, extending development beyond the originally targeted late 2026 release. Rapid studio growth and a move to the newest Unreal Engine contributed to development difficulties. The project has moved through multiple studios and leadership teams over the past decade, and recent internal reviews raised particular concerns about the narrative. Industry veteran Rod Fergusson has been assigned to lead the project, and 2K described the game as good but not good enough.
While we're excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we've made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development,
