Blizzard announced that loot boxes will make a return to Overwatch 2 starting February 18, as part of Season 15. Unlike the previous model, players will not be able to purchase them directly; instead, they will be earned through the free and premium battle passes, as well as weekly and event challenges. The new system aims to enhance player transparency, providing more details on item-drop probabilities. After several loot boxes, players are guaranteed higher quality items, responding to fan feedback for a more rewarding experience than was previously available without the loot box system.
Blizzard is looking to bring more transparency to the system, giving players more information in regards to item-drop chances and rarity guarantees.
Whereas once loot boxes were maligned as a microtransaction due to their random rewards, Blizzard is now citing community demand as the reason behind their return.
