In response to concerns over President Trump's tariffs, Sony executives addressed potential impacts on their business during a financial report. CEO Hiroki Totoki suggested local manufacturing of the PlayStation 5 in the U.S. may be a viable strategy, despite the complexities and time required. CFO Lin Tao acknowledged the possibility of raising prices due to a projected 100 billion yen ($684 million) impact from tariffs but also noted alternative measures, such as maintaining a three-month stockpile of PS5 consoles in the U.S., to navigate the current situation.
"Gaming consoles [...] can be produced locally. I think that would be an efficient strategy. Whether [PS5] is going to be manufactured in the U.S. or not needs to be considered."
"We may pass on to the price," she said, without singling out PS5 in particular. But she also said Sony was taking different measures, like shipment allocations, to mitigate the impact of tariffs.
