The Nintendo Switch 2 aims to enhance social interaction with built-in microphone and optional camera features. Inspired by developers' experiences during COVID-19, the console's unique screen-sharing idea comes from teams pointing cameras at screens to collaborate remotely. Producer Kouichi Kawamoto emphasized the collaborative feel this brought to gaming. However, Tetsuya Saskai noted that integrating these video features posed challenges due to the growing diversity of user expectations in video calls, requiring Nintendo to carefully consider which features to implement while ensuring a quality experience.
Based on our experiences during the pandemic, we proposed adding a feature to Switch 2 where people can share their gameplay screen with other players.
As video conferencing has become more common worldwide, we had to be careful in meeting diverse demands and expectations for video call systems.
