Thousands are flocking to the Bay Area for your favorite 2000s video game
Briefly

At the Genesis X2 tournament in San Jose, Juan 'Hungrybox' Debiedma, a renowned professional gamer, emotionally celebrated his first significant trophy win in nearly three years for 'Super Smash Bros. Melee.' His victory, marked by an overwhelming sense of relief after a challenging 17-year career, underscored the deeply personal stakes involved in competitive gaming. Organizers of the event, which is a hub for 'Melee' competitions, aim to foster dramatic narratives which the players, through their journeys and comebacks, organically create. The atmosphere was charged with a palpable energy, highlighting the emotional intensity of esports.
During a weekend that celebrated some of the greatest athletes in the world, one of the Bay Area's loudest cheers erupted in a nearly 3,000-seat San Jose venue when a 31-year-old man began to cry.
"My whole mentality going into this tournament was I can beat my demons," Debiedma tells SFGATE shortly after lifting the trophy. "I just told myself, 'You're right there, you're right there. You're so close, you're so close.'"
The players are the ones to create these storylines on their own and make comebacks," Boback Vakili, a lead organizer of Genesis since the beginning, told SFGATE.
Hungrybox's moment of relief and euphoria is the result of a rollercoaster 17-year career.
