Konami's announcement of a new Suikoden game, Star Leap, initially excited JRPG fans with its beautiful graphics and nostalgic elements. This installment, set between past series events, boasts extensive character collection and classic gameplay. However, the excitement waned when it was revealed that the game would be a mobile-only release, heavily incorporating gacha mechanics and paid features. Producer Shinya Fujimatsu emphasized accessibility, yet concerns grow about how these monetization strategies might affect the gameplay experience. Star Leap aims to rejuvenate a beloved franchise that has stayed dormant since 2012, but the mobile aspect raises alarm for dedicated fans.
Never before have classic JRPG fans veered so quickly from "we're so back" to "it's so over." Konami did the unthinkable and announced a new Suikoden game in the year 2025 and it looks beautiful.
Unfortunately, it's only coming to mobile and will be burdened with all that entails, like limited-time events and paid loot box-style gambling, otherwise known as 'gacha' mechanics.
