Skaters pay tribute to victims of D.C. plane crash
Briefly

The Legacy on Ice benefit event in Washington, D.C., honored the 67 victims of a midair collision near Reagan National Airport, especially remembering 28 from the figure skating community. Organized by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, U.S. Figure Skating, and others, the event featured performances by renowned skaters like Kristi Yamaguchi and Brian Boitano, aiming to raise funds and promote healing. Emotional tributes and skaters placing candles and flowers on the rink created a poignant atmosphere, reinforcing the message of resilience and community support in the aftermath of the tragedy.
We are not powerless. As skaters, we learned to be resilient and to always find a path forward that is positive.
Sports can play this convening and healing role. Our goal is to allow the community to heal, kind of a collective hug for these communities.
We're all here to support one another, whether it was our friends that were on that plane, family members, coaches, teammates, loved ones.
The dasher boards had 67 stars, one for each victim, and skaters put flowers on a rinkside table of candles before beginning their routines.
