John Carlson, a pending unrestricted free agent, was seen in the DC area with former Washington Capitals teammate Logan Thompson. Reports indicate Carlson is interested in returning to the East Coast for the 2026-27 season. Elliotte Friedman said there is thought Carlson wants to go back east, and Pierre LeBrun reported four or five Eastern teams are interested and want him to reach the free agent market. Carlson has not publicly committed to a destination, though he said he is open to returning to the Anaheim Ducks and needs time with his family. The Washington Capitals have a right-handed defenseman as an offseason priority, still need to complete their defensive roster despite re-signing Timothy Liljegren, and have $31.4 million in cap space per PuckPedia. Carlson and his wife Gina have deep DMV ties, meeting in DC, marrying in Maryland, having four children in the area, and building their dream home there.
