President Trump expressed his support for a federal takeover of Washington, D.C. due to escalating crime and homelessness. Speaking while aboard Air Force One, he stated that the district should be placed back under direct federal control to ensure safety and cleanliness, especially when hosting foreign leaders. Trump acknowledged a personal regard for Mayor Muriel Bowser but criticized her administration's effectiveness in governing the city. He emphasized that the visible signs of homelessness, particularly on the lawns and plazas, are unacceptable and tarnish D.C.'s image.
Under terms of the city's Home Rule authority, Congress already vets all D.C. laws and can outright overturn them. Some congressional Republicans have sought to go further.
Trump complained about crime and homelessness in the district, saying, 'I think we should take over Washington, D.C. make it safe.'
He argued that he can't have sights of homelessness when he hosts foreign leaders in Washington. 'You just can't let that happen,' Trump said.
Trump said he liked District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser personally, but complained about the city's governance. 'They're not doing the job,' Trump said.
