A federal judge has reaffirmed the continuation of Temporary Protected Status for over 300,000 Venezuelans, defying the Trump administration's attempts to revoke it. Judge Edward M. Chen emphasized the risk of irreparable harm to Venezuelan nationals if deportations proceed, recalling past mishaps where the government mistakenly deported individuals with legal status. The administration's admission of errors only highlights the frailty of its immigration enforcement approach, raising concerns for others wrongfully targeted in deportation efforts.
"Any removal likely could not be 'undone' should Plaintiffs [Venezuelan migrants] ultimately prevail," Chen wrote in a five-page order.
"In fact, just recently, the government mistakenly deported an individual, who has legal status to be in the United States, to El Salvador but has essentially taken the position that it cannot do anything to address that mistake."
