Danny Haas, 49, is leaving the Washington Nationals after two seasons as vice president of amateur scouting to join the Baltimore Orioles. He led Washington's draft room as scouting director and oversaw the selection of 17-year-old shortstop Eli Willits with the No. 1 pick in July. His departure is the first significant front-office exit following the firing of longtime general manager Mike Rizzo. Haas also was responsible for selecting shortstop Seaver King, taken 10th overall in 2024, who has reached Double-A Harrisburg and shown strong defense despite offensive struggles. Haas previously worked for the Diamondbacks, Red Sox and spent seven seasons with the Orioles.
Danny Haas, who served as the Washington Nationals' vice president of amateur scouting for the last two seasons, is leaving the organization to join the Baltimore Orioles, a person familiar with the decision said Wednesday. Haas, 49, led Washington's draft room as the team's scouting director and most recently shepherded the selection of 17-year-old shortstop Eli Willits, whom the Nationals took with the No. 1 pick in July.
Following the 2023 season, Rizzo hired Haas to replace Kris Kline, who had served as the team's scouting director since 2009. The two met when Rizzo was a scout for the Boston Red Sox and Haas was an outfielder in the organization. Rizzo also worked with Haas's father, Eddie, who was a scout for the Red Sox. When Haas was hired, Brad Ciolek joined the Nationals as senior director of amateur scouting and Reed Dunn was brought in to be a national crosschecker.
