Calvin Darden Jr., a businessman from Georgia, was sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison after being convicted of defrauding former NBA players Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons of millions of dollars. Darden convinced Howard to invest $7 million in a false scheme to purchase the WNBA's Atlanta Dream and took $1 million from Parsons under the pretense of aiding player development for James Wiseman. He was ordered to forfeit $8 million, along with luxury items, and was absent from the court during sentencing.
Dwight Howard testified that he was fooled into giving Darden $7 million, believing it was an investment in the purchase of the WNBA team.
Darden was convicted of scamming both Howard and Parsons out of millions, exploiting their trust and leading them into false investment schemes.
The judge's ruling included a forfeiture of $8 million along with several luxury items acquired through the fraudulent schemes.
Prosecutors highlighted that the schemes were particularly egregious given the trust placed in Darden by former professionals from the NBA.
