Mullenweg remarked that the possibility of a fork does not concern him, stating, 'There might be a fork. I mean, we've had WordPress forks before - probably about three or four times in the history [of WordPress]. That's one of the beautiful things about open source is that there can be a fork.' He added that the essence of open source includes the ability for communities to branch off, reflecting the diverse approaches within the ecosystem.
In reference to WP Engine's current version of WordPress, Mullenweg commented, 'They're very, very different from what the WordPress core is today.' He suggested that, 'If there was an official fork as a result of the growing discontent, I think that'd be fantastic, actually. So people can have alternative governance or an alternative approach,' highlighting his openness to different methodologies within the WordPress community.
Mullenweg noted the strength of the WordPress community, stating, 'WordPress 6.7, which is coming out in a few weeks, had over 600 contributors. Only about 10% of those are from Automattic.' This underscores the collaborative nature of WordPress and suggests resilience even amidst the organizational disputes.
Highlighting the active engagement with WordPress software, he pointed out, 'The WordPress core software had seen some 40 million downloads since September 17. The actual activity of WordPress is going quite strong.' This statement reflects the sustained popularity and continued development of WordPress despite the ongoing legal issues.
