Rapper Doechii has enjoyed significant recognition this year, having won a Grammy for best rap album, becoming only the third woman to achieve this after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. She was also named Billboard's Woman of the Year for her bold creativity and impressive talent. Doechii, whose real name is Jayla Ji'mya Hickmon, adopted her stage name to become someone new after her experiences with bullying. She identifies as bisexual and became comfortable discussing her sexuality through friendships with other members of the LGBTQ+ community.
