Nazia Seher, a 30-year-old electrician from Karachi, is one of 200 women trained under the Roshni Baji program to increase female representation in the energy sector. With only 4% of the workforce being women, this initiative aims to empower females like Seher, who juggles meter reading and repairs with family responsibilities. After her husband lost his job during the pandemic, the training helped support their family, allowing her to earn additional income while reshaping household dynamics and promoting financial stability, altering their lives significantly.
Getting selected for the training was a blessing. My husband had lost his job during the pandemic and the paid internship saved us.
Today, I chop the vegetables ready for her to make dinner. Our relationship was strained with constant bickering, adds Rehan. Money has brought peace.
Of the 40 in my class, 10 got job offers in K-Electric. Today, it has about 45 female meter-readers, alongside 426 men.
It's a lot of work, but I love it, she says. At home, her husband, a textile worker, now does more of the domestic chores.
