Women in Science: Air Quality and Climate Change Researcher Garima Raheja
Briefly

Garima Raheja, a Ph.D. candidate at Columbia University, actively explores the impact of climate change through her research in air pollution and energy decarbonization. Influenced by her childhood in New Delhi and later experiences in California, she aims to develop technological solutions that protect vulnerable communities. Raheja also reflects on the powerful women who inspire her, particularly her mother, a science teacher, and academic Faye McNeill, who exemplifies leadership and work-life balance. Her work underlines the intersection of personal experience and scientific purpose in addressing climate issues.
Living in California, I was inspired by the technology of Silicon Valley, and wanted to do impactful technological science that mitigated the worst effects of climate change.
My mom, Pratibha Raheja, is a former pharmacist and current science teacher who inspires hundreds of students every year to find their curiosity.
As a Ph.D. candidate, I research machine learning methods for measuring air pollution in marginalized communities across the world.
I hope to keep working on decarbonization and climate science, especially to help the vulnerable populations affected by environmental challenges.
