A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan just before midnight on Sunday, killing more than 2,200 people and becoming the country's deadliest quake in decades. Five shallow aftershocks followed, the strongest measuring magnitude 5.6, and additional tremors have rattled Kabul and Islamabad. At least 10 more people were reported injured across eight provinces, bringing total injuries to more than 3,700 from the initial quake. Collapsed houses and destroyed villages were reported in Kunar and surrounding areas. Many residents have stayed in tents or the open because houses built of dry masonry, stone and timber are unsafe amid continuing aftershocks.
