In Tasmania, a rescue operation is taking place for over 150 dolphins, including false killer whales, found beached. Out of the 157 stranded, 136 are alive, but rescuers face difficulties due to the remote location. Local reports mention that the dolphins were discovered by a fisherman, and authorities are mobilizing marine experts and veterinarians to assist. Reasons for the stranding remain unclear, and the weight of the dolphins complicates potential rescue efforts, suggesting euthanasia may be considered if necessary to alleviate suffering.
The water was surging right up and they were thrashing. They're just dying, they've sunk down in the sand. I think it's too late.
As with any stranding, euthanasia is an option to minimize suffering, and we do have vets on site to help make informed decisions if that is deemed necessary.
