"I did not kill Agnes Wanjiru. I do not believe I ever met her either. Neither would I joke about killing a woman. I only heard about the incident weeks later when I was on a military exercise in Canada. Only much later than that was I told a body had been found in a tank. I never booked the hotel room, can't remember ever being in it. I think we were back in camp by midnight."
"Agnes Wanjiru was found two months after she disappeared in March 2012 in a septic tank behind a hotel in the town of Nanyuki, Kenya. An inquest in 2018 concluded Wanjiru, a hairdresser and the mother of a five-month-old baby, was murdered by British soldiers after she was found half-naked in a septic tank at the Lions Court hotel two months after she disappeared. She was last seen leaving the hotel with a soldier."
Robert James Purkiss, 38, is accused of the alleged murder of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru in Nanyuki in 2012 and faces extradition to Kenya. Wanjiru disappeared in March 2012 and was found two months later half-naked in a septic tank behind the Lions Court hotel. An inquest in 2018 concluded she was murdered by British soldiers. Purkiss has denied the allegation and said he did not kill Wanjiru and does not believe he ever met her. The court heard a colleague allegedly saw Purkiss crying outside the hotel and saying, "I've killed her," and that he reacted with a smiling emoji to a reference to the septic tank. He has Ministry of Defence funding for his defence and is held on remand.
