Across cities and towns in Iran, the younger generation faces a reality where dreams are deferred, voices are silenced, and the future grows more uncertain. "My city used to be beautiful, but now it's become lifeless. All my friends are leaving," Elnaz* a Gen Z Iranian told DW."
"Despite official claims of a 7.6% unemployment rate, a closer look at Iran's labor market tells a grimmer story especially for youth and women. Nearly 1 in 5 young Iranians are unemployed. For millions, having a job no longer means escaping poverty, with some estimates showing 80% of households earning below the global poverty line. Young Iranian Bita* describes daily life with quiet frustration."
Soaring inflation, rising unemployment, and diminishing opportunities have severely undermined the economic and social lives of many young Iranians. Youth and women face disproportionately high joblessness, with nearly one in five young people unemployed and estimates that a large majority of households fall below the global poverty line. Many employed households still cannot cover basic food and goods, forcing families to ration staples across months. Short conflicts and renewed international sanctions have reduced work and income prospects. Young people with family support fare better, while others exhaust training and multiple jobs yet see declining hope and growing migration.
