During an address to journalists, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the imperative of using communication to foster peace rather than conflict. He referenced Pope Francis' earlier call to disarm communication of negativity and encouraged a listening approach that uplifts marginalized voices. The Pope reinforced support for imprisoned journalists and underscored their bravery in reporting, especially in war contexts. In light of contemporary challenges, including artificial intelligence, he urged for responsible communication that champions dignity and justice, particularly in times of global unrest such as in Gaza and Ukraine.
The way we communicate is of fundamental importance: we must say 'no' to the war of words and images, we must reject the paradigm of war.
Let us disarm communication of all prejudice and resentment, fanaticism and even hatred; let us free it from aggression. We do not need loud, forceful communication.
The Church recognizes these witnesses...the courage of those who defend dignity, justice and the right of people to be informed, because only informed individuals can make free choices.
We are living in times that are both difficult to navigate and to recount...they demand that each one of us, in our different roles and services, never give in to mediocrity.
