A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck northwestern Thailand and neighboring Myanmar, leading to over 2,000 fatalities and significant destruction, particularly in Sagaing and Mandalay. Thae Su Lin, in Thailand, worries for her family in Myanmar, with many still trapped after buildings collapsed. Rescue efforts are urgent as time is critical; the first 72 hours are vital for saving lives. Experts note that the chances of rescuing those trapped diminish rapidly over time, though miraculous recoveries can sometimes occur. Relief efforts are ongoing, but the situation remains dire as many await help.
"I've never experienced an earthquake that strong in my life," she said, recalling the moment that the 7.7 magnitude quake hit.
"The first 24 to 72 hours are a small window that is there to save the lives of people that are trapped inside the buildings," said Dr. Unni Krishnan.
"The longer a life has been buried under the bricks, the slimmer the chance that the life can be rescued," said Wang Yu.
"In some situations, we see there are some miracles that happen," he said, adding, "it's not that common."
