After five years of stringent border closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, North Korea has permitted a limited number of Western tourists to enter the country. This group includes visitors from various countries such as the UK, Canada, and Germany. They entered via land from China and toured important sites in the northeastern city of Rason. Koryo Tours, the travel company facilitating this trip, anticipates more tours. The move reflects North Korea's attempt to revive its tourism industry, a vital source of foreign currency prior to the pandemic.
The opening of North Korea's borders to Western tourists signifies a cautious return to international tourism, which had been effectively halted since January 2020 due to the pandemic.
Simon Cockerell from Koryo Tours mentioned that the initial group of 13 tourists visited several key locations in North Korea, showcasing the country's rich historical sites and restricted environment.
