The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has commenced hearings to evaluate Israel's accountability for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as requested by the UN General Assembly. Palestinian officials claim Israel has weaponized aid, exacerbating shortages of essential supplies for residents since the blockade began over 18 months ago. Representatives from 38 countries, alongside Arab and African organizations, are presenting their positions to the court. Although the ICJ's advisory opinion may influence future international legal norms, its nonbinding nature raises concerns regarding compliance from Israel and other states.
Starvation is here. Humanitarian aid is being used as a weapon of war," stated top Palestinian official Ammar Hijazi during the ongoing hearings at the International Court of Justice.
The ICJ has been tasked by the UN with providing an advisory opinion on a priority basis and with the utmost urgency, addressing Israel's humanitarian obligations.
