Shakespeare's Henry IV, encompassing Parts 1 and 2, presents a blend of comedy and tragedy while exploring the human condition of political leaders. The latest production at Theatre for a New Audience, directed by Eric Tucker, brings a clear and solid adaptation lasting just under four hours. While the staging captures the vibrancy of Shakespeare’s language and structure, it falls short of fully embracing the emotional extremes of the text. The character Hotspur's poetic lines exemplify the contrasting themes of honor and humor, enriching the narrative's depth and complexity.
Taken as a single story, Henry IV is as hilarious as Shakespeare's best comedies and as devastating as the tragedies.
What they don't do is throw themselves all the way into the material's glorious heights or its startlingly painful depths.
