Director Vin Shambry views the play 'Pass Over' as a multifaceted exploration of Black life, addressing topics such as racism, violence, and friendship. His approach highlights the importance of joy and camaraderie among Black individuals despite societal hardships. The play, written by Antoinette Nwandu, is a contemporary retelling inspired by Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot', while also reflecting the social upheaval following George Floyd's murder. Corrib Theatre's Holly Griffith emphasizes the need for introspection regarding Irish complicity in policing, linking historical struggles with current realities of oppression.
There are layers of our current reality, the past, racism, the Civil Rights struggle, suicide, police violence... This is a beautiful, motivating story about people finding themselves.
I read Pass Over out of a sense of duty, probably out of a sense of guilt...It would put to shame our ancestors' fight for freedom if we didn't examine our cultural complicity.
