Block paving can be transformed into a mini edible garden by utilizing gaps for planting. Preparation involves removing weeds and applying sharp sand for drainage. Following Monty Don's advice, seeds mixed with compost are planted into the cracks. Within weeks, initial sprouting occurs, and lettuce growth accelerates with regular care. Further compost was added as root expansion exceeded expectations, indicating successful adaptation of plants in a hard landscape.
After just two to three weeks and regular watering, initial sprouting started to form. Four to five weeks later, the lettuce went from strength to strength.
Monty Don advised: 'Use a pressure hose to wash away algae, moss and weeds, then brush sharp sand into the joints.' This helps with drainage.
After removing the weeds from the block paving, sand was worked into the cracks, which led to better drainage for the planted seeds.
Mixing the seeds with compost before pushing them into the gaps was crucial for ensuring optimal growth during the initial planting phase.
