Last September, monsoon rains devastated the village of Panauti in Nepal, flooding homes and farmland and leading to tragic losses. With the Roshi River overflowing, many residents faced destruction and despair, including 45-year-old Bishnu Humagain who had previously rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake. In Kathmandu, the capital recorded its highest rainfall in over 50 years, claiming lives and further straining recovery efforts. Experts warn that climate change is exacerbating these disasters, with Nepalâs topography making it especially vulnerable to floods and landslides, complicating ongoing resilience efforts.
"We lost everything â our home, our agriculture, and all of our belongings," says Bishnu Humagain, reflecting on the devastating impact of the floods in Panauti.
"Climate change is making resilience efforts more challenging, as we are observing disasters with a frequency and magnitude never seen before," says Birendra Bajracharya from ICIMOD.
