In New York's NoHo neighborhood, pockets of nostalgic artist residences persist despite new high-rises. Gabriel Yuri, founder of New Operations Workshop, discovered a partially renovated 860-square-foot studio that resonated with its historic charm. Over four years, he painstakingly restored various original features, such as pine floors, brick walls, and tin ceiling tiles salvaged from neighboring renovations. Yuri valued the building's character and history, showcasing his dedication to preserving architectural elements while upgrading the space to fit modern needs.
Many might have been daunted by the workload, but Yuri welcomed the challenge. He spent nearly four years peeling back the renovations-often himself, sometimes with the help of a handyman.
I wanted something that had history and character, so it was great that I got to this one while it still had some of that intact.
