Kitchen of the Week: "Preserving the Spirit of the Old" in Reims, France
Briefly

The kitchen in a rehabbed house in Reims reflects a blend of antique charm and thoughtful design by owners Annabelle Brun and Brice Bérard. It is located in a repurposed artist's studio and exemplifies their commitment to preserving the old spirit during renovations. They sourced all furniture and decor from antique markets and salvaged materials from demolition sites. Unique design elements include a weathered buffet as a kitchen island, custom skylights for natural light, and distinctive light switches, creating a cozy yet stylish atmosphere for their family home.
All of the furniture and decor in the house was discovered by Brice and myself at professional antique markets. The couple also works with demolition companies to salvage interesting pieces, like this oversized vintage window that separates the kitchen from the open living room.
A coat of white paint on the exposed brick freshens up the space. A few unexpected moments: a single black accordion sconce and an antique mirror as backsplash behind the stove.
A fool-proof way to add character to any kitchen: bring in old furniture pieces. Here, a weathered buffet serves as kitchen island.
The unique light switches detail matters. The kitchen has no windows to the exterior but a skylight provides some natural light.
