MPNYC transforms 19th-century warehouse into flexible cultural venue in piraeus
"Andreas Kostopoulos reactivates a 19th-century warehouse into Castor Place, a multi-use cultural venue designed to host an evolving spectrum of events, balancing preservation with a forward-looking spatial strategy."
"The project embraces indeterminacy, utilizing modular staging systems and adaptable lighting to create a responsive instrument shaped by its occupants, allowing the venue to continuously reconfigure according to use."
"The venue takes its name from Kastoros Street, embedding a subtle narrative of duality into the project's identity, expressed through parallel conditions: old and new, heavy and light, fixed structure and fluid use."
Castor Place is a multi-use cultural venue in Piraeus, reactivated from a 19th-century warehouse by Andreas Kostopoulos of MPNYC. The design preserves the original 1850s structure while introducing flexibility for lectures, exhibitions, and performances. A process of subtraction restores natural light and permeability, creating a welcoming environment. The venue embraces indeterminacy with modular systems and an open floor plan, allowing continuous reconfiguration. Named after Kastoros Street, it reflects a narrative of duality, merging old and new elements while maintaining historical traces alongside contemporary design.
