The New Castle in Merewether is a distinctive residence blending mystery and nature within a walled garden. Its limestone wall provides a partial barrier, inviting curiosity while preserving privacy. Inside, rooms create intimate interactions with diverse outdoor spaces, promoting natural light and airflow. The architecture features intriguing scales and proportions, utilizing non-native limestone and raw concrete for a unique aesthetic. Each level of the home offers a different relationship with the garden, enhancing the overall experience of the residence.
Despite its size, the house never fully reveals its scale from the street. Openings are either massive or minimal - never in between - enhancing its sense of mystery.
Inside the garden wall, the rooms of the house snake around, forming more hidden pockets of outdoor space. This procession of rooms invites natural light and ventilation into every corner.
I intentionally wanted the project to appear otherworldly and intriguing. This was achieved by creating uncanny scales and proportions and using vaguely familiar materials in unexpected ways.
The varying levels throughout the home cultivate a unique relationship with the garden, with each floor engaging in a distinct dialogue with the outdoor environment.
