The Safety Shelters initiative responded to requests from the K Stjwetla Patrollers, a volunteer group addressing high crime rates in the settlement. The project transformed the typical guard hut, often treated as an “architecture of fear,” into shelters designed to be dignified, open, and visible. Two prototypes were co-produced at key hotspots in Stjwetla. Local artisans, students, and residents participated in construction. Repurposed materials were used to support sustainability and affordability. The prototypes were built directly in the settlement to ensure relevance to local needs and conditions.
