Charlotte Hohorst, a VP of design at JBC PR, shares her experience of finding and transforming her rented townhouse in Brentwood, Los Angeles, during the pandemic. Initially struggling for space and charm while apartment hunting, she discovered a two-bedroom townhouse with excellent light and layout. Over five years, she creatively decorated by combining DIY projects and thrift store finds, often seeking encouragement from friends. Although limited by budget, Charlotte fully embraced her creative instincts to turn her space into a colorful haven that reflects her personality and style.
When the pandemic hit, I realized I needed more space if I was going to be working from home. If you've ever apartment hunted on the west side of Los Angeles, you know the pickings are pretty slim unless you have a huge budget.
Charlotte describes the rental as having a dream layout, walkable neighborhood, and amazing light from big windows. It was old and pretty dated - but I had a blank canvas and a lot of time at home on my hands.
I would ask for gut checks like 'Should I just paint this whole room navy blue? Should I do this dragon wallpaper?' and every time they would respond 'Hell yeah.'
If I had an unlimited budget, I would have gone a lot crazier... Instead I really leaned into Facebook Marketplace; I shopped the sales, the estate sales, the thrift shops.
