The renovation of the Huangyan Grottoes in Taizhou focuses on creating a cafe, multifunctional design store, and a pop-up shop using modular furniture. Due to time constraints, the renovation avoided major changes to existing structures, instead opting for anodized aluminum to contrast with the stone grottoes. The team designed versatile furniture with minimal types and a limited material palette, allowing flexibility in spatial arrangements. This approach aimed to enhance user experience while preserving the site's natural integrity and making construction more efficient.
The furniture units, crafted from anodized aluminum, can be reconfigured to create varying spatial experiences while preserving the original characteristics of the Huangyan Grottoes.
By limiting the materials and furniture types, the design aims to create diverse environments while maintaining a minimal impact on the surrounding landscape.
