On the second day of a class trip in Bangladesh, the journey involved crossing the Jamuna Bridge to visit the Sirajganj Hardpoint, an embankment that protects the town from a shifting river. After traversing rural landscapes, including fields and Bangladesh's first nuclear plant, the group visited the tomb of the enlightened poet Lalon Shah. They experienced performances of his songs, reflecting Bangladeshi culture. The day concluded with an exploration of the Gorai River, facing challenges from water diversion and historical changes to the Ganges, highlighting critical ecological issues in the region.
The shift in the Ganges channel has caused a decline in the Gorai, necessitating dredging to maintain its flow, affecting the ecosystem and communities.
Visiting Lalon Shah's shrine, we experienced the richness of Bangladeshi culture through his music, highlighting the melding of art and spirituality in social reform.
