BERKELEY A 74-year-old woman died Wednesday afternoon in a fire at her duplex near Strawberry Creek Park. Authorities were trying to confirm her identity and notify relatives before releasing her name. The fire erupted about 3:53 p.m. Wednesday at a single-story duplex in the 1300 block of Poe Street. Officials said the first crew of firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke showing from three sides of the structure. Crews were also alerted there was a possible victim inside the house.
Firefighters were dispatched to a six-story apartment building on 35th St. near 31st Ave. in Astoria after a fire broke out on the third floor just before 11 p.m. on Thursday. A woman in her 90s and a 61-year-old woman were removed from an apartment and taken to Mount Sinai Queens, where the older woman died. Her name was not immediately disclosed. The younger woman was listed in critical condition at the hospital, officials said. The fire was put out by 11:30 p.m.
Fire marshals in Queens are investigating what sparked a three-alarm fire in a tire shop that extended to a nearby apartment building early on Saturday morning. Two firefighters wound up being hospitalized after being caught in a burst of smoke and flame during the fire that engulfed 1905 Flushing Ave. in Ridgewood just after 4 a.m. on Jan. 17. The first responding units from FDNY Battalion 28 reported heavy smoke pouring out of the tire shop and apartment building.
The first blaze broke out shortly before 6 p.m. Friday at 301 Pennsylvania Ave. in East New York, where members of the 15th Division arrived to find heavy fire on the first floor and extension to the second. Engine Company 290 and Ladder Company 103 knocked back the flames, and the fire was declared under control at 6:45 p.m.
