Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly after 9pm on Monday following the serious incident on Railway Street, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, in which a pedestrian was struck by a car.

"The alarm was raised after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene," a garda spokesperson said.

"During the boom, Balbriggan became a dumping ground for social housing, leading to its decline. However, it's now experiencing a quiet renaissance that deserves attention."
