The families of two men killed in a boat strike in the Caribbean in October are suing the U.S. government for wrongful death and extrajudicial killing. Chad Joseph, 26, and Rishi Samaroo, 41, were returning from Venezuela to Las Cuevas, Trinidad and Tobago, on Oct. 14 when their boat was struck by a U.S. missile. The two Trinidadian men were among six people killed in the strike, the fifth attack on what the Trump administration says were suspected drug-carrying vessels.

"When you walk inside these walls, you experience a different trauma," Schiff said during the visit. "You get to see what happens to folks who are apprehended by ICE."

The families of two people who died in San Diego jails last year have filed separate civil rights lawsuits in federal court both accusing the Sheriff's Office and its private medical contractors of systemic failures they say took the lives of Callen Lines and Corey Dean. Lines died from drug withdrawal in the Las Colinas women's jail in May, a day after her arrest. Dean, who suffered from schizophrenia, died two months later in the Vista jail after weeks in solitary confinement. Both lawsuits, filed last week by attorneys Grace Jun and Danielle Pena, allege staff ignored repeated pleas for help from both.

The owner of a South Dakota hotel who said Native Americans were banned from the establishment was found liable for discrimination against Native Americans on Friday. A federal jury decided the owner of the Grand Gateway Hotel in Rapid City will pay tens of thousands of dollars in damages to various plaintiffs who were denied service at the hotel. The jury awarded $1 to the NDN Collective, the Indigenous advocacy group that filed the lawsuit.

Thomas Fuller, who owned Crossroads Bar and Grill, asserts that the Town of Rockford "effectively singled [him] out because of his sexual orientation, deprived him of equal protection under the law, and forced him to close his business," according to the lawsuit filed in September in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama Northern Division. After obtaining a business and an ABC Board liquor license in 2023, Fuller was scheduled to meet with the town council in July to request a local liquor license. This is "the same letter of approval that was issued to other businesses in Rockford," the suit claims.
