Toronto police have issued a warning about a fraud and extortion scam in the Greater Toronto Area that involves threatening phone calls or text messages from U.S. phone numbers, mainly from area codes 470 and 404. Victims report demands for money, paired with ominous threats of violence if they don't comply. The police are urging the public to recognize this as a common scam aimed at extorting money, and they recommend immediate reporting and avoiding payment in such cases.
"Victims of these incidents are often contacted through social media platforms, such as WhatsApp and Facebook, which allow online chat groups," police said in the release.
