Experienced skydiver and wingsuit coach Chas McNeil, 49, died following a skydive at Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Devon on Saturday.
Turns out the sci-fi filmmakers got it backwards. All those '70s and '80s dystopias like "Rollerball," "The Running Man," "Death Race 2000," imagined futures in which sports were full of gadgets and gimmicks like armored cars, rocket-powered motorbikes, and electrified arenas. In reality, we got the opposite - the padding's gone, and the high-tech monitoring equipment is nowhere to be found.
Skiing is hard enough as it is, but the Sickos crew wanted to see if they could make it even harder. They've done a lot in the past to do that, including skiing on enormous, 11-foot-long skis, but this new style of skiing seems to take it to the next level. Using FPV goggles, a camera, and a pretty impressive rig, they managed to set up a real-life 3rd person skiing experience.
Everyone was really stoked to see it, Toby Calhoun, a highliner who helped set up these ropes and rigs, told the Chronicle. I was getting lots of questions from campers and people at the beach. A lot of them assumed that because it was such a big project that there was a bigger purpose, or that we were doing an ad or something, but it was just a bunch of friends getting together to have a good time.
We like doing crazy things, and driving a BMX bike at an F1 car was a challenge we thought we were up to. We put the wheels in motion with Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Kriss, and needed to make sure that safety was paramount.
