Guyanese officials say they will seek the death penalty for an alleged Venezuelan criminal gang member if he is found guilty of planting a bomb at a petrol station on Sunday that killed a schoolgirl and injured four people. Police captured Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo at a coastal village on Tuesday, two days after they said that CCTV footage had placed him at a city Mobil Petrol station with a bag containing the explosives that killed a six-year-old girl and hurt four other people.

At least 17 people have been killed in a prison riot in Ecuador, the second deadly prison brawl to hit the country this week. Thursday's fighting broke out in the coastal city of Esmeraldas near the Colombian border. Police reportedly found dead prisoners inside their cellblocks, and images shared on social media and verified by the AFP news agency show victims sprawled on the ground with bare, blood-stained torsos. At least two of them were decapitated.

Cynthia Gonzalez, vice mayor of Cudahy, called on gangs to organize against federal immigration sweeps, stirring controversy and prompting condemnation from the Department of Homeland Security.
