MANSFIELD, Conn. (AP) - A freight train derailed Thursday in Connecticut, sending cars carrying flammable liquid propane into the water, though officials say they don't appear to be leaking. Local and state officials said the derailment happened around 9 a.m. in Mansfield, near where Eagleville Lake meets the Willimantic River. The rural town in the eastern part of the state is home to the University of Connecticut.

The Vallejo Fire Department have removed hazardous materials, including a five-gallon bucket of methamphetamine, at the Vallejo Inn on Wednesday afternoon. At approximately 1:40 p.m., the department arrived at the venue located at 444 Tennessee Street and found the unidentified hazardous material inside the five-gallon bucket, which warranted a full HazMat response. The property was then evacuated to ensure the safety of occupants and roads were closed off nearby soon after.

"It's going to be an incident that goes throughout the night because of the materials involved," Navarre said. "We have heavy equipment here that's going to help us break down the building and continue to put the fires out."

Five staffers were hospitalized after an unknown substance was discovered in a Chino prison, authorities said Tuesday, Jan 20. Firefighters with the Chino Valley Fire District responded to the California Institution for Women just before 10 a.m., Tuesday, the district said. They responded after an unknown chemical substance was found on a joint and a Bible page at the prison, according to an initial hazardous materials spills report filed with the state.

Internal breakdowns like those add to the chronic terror neighbors and businesses face downwind of the refinery, said Heidi Taylor, who lives along its fence line in downtown Martinez. She said she's seen level-one alerts and enormous flaring almost every day for the past month, which was confirmed by Contra Costa County officials. It's the public that suffers as a result of MRC's incompetence, or what I would argue is gross negligence, Taylor said Tuesday at a Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors meeting.
